Mesquite was founded along the Texas & Pacific Railway in 1873 and incorporated in 1887. It sits mostly in Dallas County, with a portion in Kaufman County, and counted 150,108 residents in the 2020 Census. Much of the city grew during the post-World War II suburban boom, and neighborhoods include Original Town, Broadmoor Estates, Casa View Heights, Creek Crossing and Solterra Texas. Interstate access is unusually direct: I-30 crosses the north side, I-635 runs through the middle, and I-20 crosses the south, so an out-of-state truck can be on an interstate within minutes of most addresses. Mesquite's parking ordinance matters on moving day. Commercial and oversized vehicles, defined as longer than 22 feet, wider than 8 feet or taller than 10 feet, are not allowed to park on city streets except while loading or unloading personal property at a specific address, so the truck should not be parked there overnight. Most students attend Mesquite ISD, and a small part of the city is in Dallas ISD. Green Van Lines, founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the US, moves DFW households to other states from Farmers Branch, roughly 25 miles away.

City rules worth knowing before move day. Check the linked source for the current wording.

  • Commercial and oversized vehicles (longer than 22 feet, wider than 8 feet or taller than 10 feet; step vans and panel trucks count regardless of size) may not park on public streets or alleys, except for the expeditious loading or unloading of personal property at a specific location. They also may not be parked or stored on private property in residential districts, with the same loading exemption.

  • The city summary of the amended parking ordinance bars commercial/oversized vehicles, RVs, trailers and boats from streets for more than 24 hours, with enforcement beginning after January 1, 2021.

Mesquite questions

Can a moving truck park on my street in Mesquite?

Only while it is being loaded or unloaded. Mesquite's ordinance bars commercial and oversized vehicles (over 22 feet long, 8 feet wide or 10 feet tall) from parking on public streets and alleys, but it exempts the expeditious loading or unloading of personal property at a specific location. The truck should not be left parked overnight before or after the move.

Which interstate will my truck take out of Mesquite?

It depends on where you live and where you're going. I-30 runs across north Mesquite toward Arkansas, I-20 runs across the south side toward Louisiana and West Texas, and I-635 (LBJ Freeway) runs through the middle of the city and links the two.

Which school district serves Mesquite?

Mesquite ISD serves most of the city, and Dallas ISD serves a small portion. Confirm your district before requesting records for your new school.
