Allen is a Collin County city of 104,627 people (2020 Census), approximately 25 miles northeast of Farmers Branch. US 75 runs north to south through the middle of town, and SH 121, the Sam Rayburn Tollway, follows its northwestern edge near McKinney. Most Allen homes are owner-occupied, about 70% in 2020, and 44% of households had children under 18. Housing runs from 1990s brick homes in Watters Crossing and Suncreek to Starcreek near SH 121 and newer construction in Ridgeview Crossing, with Twin Creeks and Montgomery Farm on the west side. Many have active HOAs, so check their rules on trucks and containers early. Allen ISD serves most of the city, with pockets in Lovejoy, McKinney and Plano ISDs. Two city rules matter on moving day. The city's code FAQ says commercial trucks and trailers may not park or stand in residential districts, so it is worth asking how that applies before you set a date. A portable storage container needs no permit, but Allen asks you to notify Code Compliance and prefers it on the driveway. Green Van Lines, founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the US, moves DFW households to other states.

SourceCommercial trucks, tractors and trailers may not park or stand in a residential district (city Code Compliance FAQ). Confirm with the city how this applies to a moving truck on load day.

Allen questions
Do I need a permit for a portable storage container in Allen?
No permit is required, but Allen asks you to tell Code Compliance what the container is for and how long it will stay. It should sit on the driveway; if that is not possible it may go on the street as long as it does not block mailboxes, traffic signs or traffic.
Can a moving truck park on my Allen street?
Allen's code FAQ says commercial trucks, tractors and trailers may not park or stand in residential districts, and it lists no exceptions. Check with Allen Code Compliance and your HOA before move day so the truck can be loaded without a violation.
Which highway will the truck use leaving Allen?
Most trucks take US 75, which runs through the center of Allen, or SH 121 (Sam Rayburn Tollway) along the city's northwestern edge, depending on the destination.
