DeSoto is a Dallas County city of 56,145 people (2020 Census) in the Best Southwest area, alongside Cedar Hill, Duncanville and Lancaster. It was incorporated in 1949, passed 30,000 residents by 1990, and was named an All-America City by the National Civic League in 2006. Its civic heart is Town Center, a former strip center rebuilt to hold city hall, the library, a civic center and an outdoor amphitheater. The Woodland Hills community to the northwest voted to join DeSoto in 1974. The city is established rather than new. The 2020 Census counted 21,238 housing units, and with a median age of 41, many residents have spent years in their homes and have the belongings to show for it. Most students attend DeSoto ISD, which also serves Glenn Heights and Ovilla.
