Grand Prairie stretches across Dallas, Tarrant and Ellis counties, with a sliver in Johnson County, and counted 196,100 residents in the 2020 Census. It began as a railroad stop on the Texas and Pacific line in the 1870s and later became an aircraft-manufacturing center. Over the decades it annexed communities such as Dalworth Park, Mountain Creek, Florence Hill and Shady Grove. Because the city is long and narrow, both I-30 and I-20 cross it from east to west, and SH 161 (the President George Bush Turnpike) and SH 360 run north and south. Which one your truck uses depends on whether you start near Downtown Grand Prairie or farther south toward the Ellis County line. Grand Prairie ISD serves most of the Dallas County side, while Arlington, Mansfield, Cedar Hill, Irving and Midlothian ISDs cover other parts. The city prohibits parking oversized vehicles, those over 1.5 tons, 8 feet wide or 16 feet long, in residential neighborhoods, which affects where a moving truck can stage. Green Van Lines, founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the US, runs long-distance moves out of DFW, including Grand Prairie.
